A Short History of Rhodes Island

Rhodes Island has been inhabited since the Neolithic Age, with artefacts from this period having been found in the famous Acropolis of Rhodes. The island was also inhabited during the Archaic, Classical, and Hellenistic periods, with the ancient city of Rhodes being built during the Hellenistic period. The city was once the capital of the island, as well as of the whole of the Dodecanese, and was renowned for its culture and philosophy. The island is also famous for its Colossus of Rhodes, which was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The Colossus stood in the city of Rhodes for over 800 years until it was destroyed by an earthquake in 224 BC. Rhodes Island also played a significant role in world history during the Crusades and the Ottoman-Venetian wars and the Middle Ages. In the Middle Ages, Rhodes was the seat of the Knights of St. John, one of the most powerful orders of chivalry in Europe. The island remained under the control of the Knights of St. John for almost 400 years. During this period, Rhodes became one of the most important and wealthiest areas of the Mediterranean. In 1912, Rhodes became a part of the modern Greek state and is now one of the largest islands in Greece.

The Beauty of Rhodes Island

Rhodes Island has been described as having ‘the most stunning beaches in Greece’, and there are many reasons why this is true. The largest city and county of the island, as well as its capital, is named Rhodes. With a population of around 90,000, the city is a vibrant urban hub that offers visitors a wide range of attractions, such as the Archaeological Museum of Rhodes, the Knights’ Castle, and the Medieval Town. The beautifully preserved old town of Rhodes is an architectural dream, with its narrow cobblestone streets, Venetian architecture, and Moorish influences making it one of the most unique and picturesque cities in Greece. Rhodes Island is also famous for its beaches. The most well-known of these is Psalidi Beach, considered the most beautiful beach in Greece. The Party Scene of Rhodes Island

One of the most talked about aspects of the island is its vibrant nightlife. The island’s two main marinas and cruise ship ports and most of the visitors are often seen enjoying the nightlife on the island after disembarking their yachts. Rhodes Island has a very sophisticated and elegant nightlife, but it is also very different to what one might expect on a Greek island. In the larger towns on the island, such as Rhodes, Lindos, and Kolymbari, you will find nightclubs and bars that often play house and techno music. In the other towns on the island, such as Ialysos, Gyaros, and Agios Pavlos, visitors will find a more traditional Greek nightlife, with Greek music and dancing being the main attractions.
